#1I am currently helping a client re-surface her fireplace. We plan to demo the existing brick, and do something entirely different. Take a walk with me through some of her options...
Let's go Antiquing...
New doesn't really need to be new. We could find an antique fireplace surround that can add charm, character, and style. The two pictured, the one at the top and the one below are from Architectural Antiques. This is an idea that I would pursue especially if the client were going for more of a shabby chic or Victorian look.

I love the character that comes to a room from using an antique rather than new. However, for this client, she has built-ins on either side of the fireplace that would not look right with a wood antique between them. (I'll include pictures in a later post.)
Now- stone is another story- check out the antique surrounds below, from the same source:

If you are interested in Architectural Salvage- you can start by just googling it in your area- I found the mantles below in Berkely, CA- not too far from my place...#5

#6
Then there's the $20,000 hand carved Italian Marble- (Don't worry Janie, I'm not suggesting it, I just think it is cool...)
#7
Above is an Etched Tennesee Pink Marble- again, not right for my job- but kinda cool...
OK- I have to run for today- so- which antique is your favorite? I am going to go with #4. Do you like the idea of using an antique, or would rather have a new one? Frequently clients like the idea of antiques because they INCREASE in value over time. What do you think?

I am not an antique kind of person and prefer the new. My favorite was #6. I liked how ornate it was...
I wouldn't mind going antique, but sadly, one wouldn't look right in my house. I am a big fan of stone fp surrounds. My favorites are #4 & #5.
i like 4 and 6 best.
I like 3 and 4, and I love the idea of using an antique, especially if it's already in your area.
