Megan's Slider Door

Hi Christine.
I just came across your blog yesterday and l-o-v-e it! Free design advice? Life doesn't get much better than that! I was actually searching for a solution to this problem when I found your blog. I have a sliding patio door in my kitchen and use bamboo sliding panels similar to the attached picture to cover it. The door is south facing, so I love how they filter light during the day - my kitchen stays bright but I'm not blinded. The problem is that during the evening, everyone in my neighborhood can see into my lit up kitchen (HOA doesn't allow privacy fences...). I was thinking of buying brown grommet curtain panels to hang on each side, but am not sure how that would look. I also am worried that the curtain hardware/rod would look weird next to the existing panel hardware OR wouldn't allow enough room for the curtains to slide over the bamboo panels. What do you think? Buy curtain panels or is there another solution?

Dear Megan,
I would add curtain panels. In addition to being the privacy that you need, they will also add softness, texture, color, and pattern. I don't have a picture of your home, but in most cases- this would be the perfect solution.

If you don't want two horizontal pieces hung right be each other- consider an installation like the one above- you would need the tie backs all the way across, with the drape swung to the side- like suggested in this post. You might find that this would give you too much block out- and you want more light in the day- depending on your circumstance.

Another option is to hang your drape from the ceiling as shown here in this bedroom. I also think it wouldn't be a problem to have it just hung above your sliding bamboo panels.
