The Hatbox

I went shopping today with a client for bathroom items and we were musing over the Kohler Hatbox commode. At a price in the $3000 range- I would go into it with pretty high expectations... Is it cool? Is it just too strange? Is it too small? It sure looks easy to clean... Do you think it would be uncomfortable? (it is a standard comfort height) Do you trust a commode that can't use gravity to flush? I love the idea of the quiet close lid. It comes in nine colors :) What do you think?

Perhaps we are looking at the future- and in 20 years all commodes will look like this???? This independent review gave it a thumbs up! :)

The Modern Bedroom

THE BED- I did a post exclusively on the bed here. I like the tones in this Cliff Young bed- a "cooler" tone of brown. I also like the cream leather- it feels like a very inviting headboard.

THE PAPER- I am looking at this paper in person- and as computer screens will do- it is a yellower green than it appears - it goes great with the bedding in this post. I like this paper as it brings in a contemporary Asian feel- and adds that unexpected element to the room that gives it pattern and "personality." It is from Ronald Redding- Bronze Age.

THE FIREPLACE- this streamlined fireplace will give the bedroom life and warmth..

THE BEDDING. A platform bed is asking for this tailored bedding that will always look perfect- and easy to "make."

THE LAMPS- I like the one on the right- with the muted shades of green and brown. The squatty style is also good for the low bed.

THE RUG- OK so I don't know what I want to do with the rug- this is where I'd like some feedback. I like rugs that bring in the brown, black and green. A rug like the one above would also be fun to add a light grayish blue pillow on the bed. The Asian lines in this birch tree rug are great- I like the introduction of the burnt red in this rug. I might go with a red grass cloth rather than the leaf pattern with this rug. (the example above is from Phillp Jeffries) I don't want too many "leaves." Now this rug with the blue is awesome! I would use a bright blue grasscloth and throw on a blue accent pillow. (Phillip Jeffries again on the paper above.) I appreciate the clean Asian lines in the rug above. It would also have a striking contrast on the dark floors. I really like these wavy lines! Very modern and fun- bringing color and personality into the room.

So- tell me- which rug is your favorite? Which do you think goes best with the wallpaper? Rugs from Angela Adams and Homedecorators.com

The Results Show

Today's post is a continuation of the previous post "How much does it cost?" Our winner was.... Kim W. Congratulations! (e-mail me your shipping address for your big prize :) What threw the guessers off the most- I would have to say was the set of Palecek chairs. Guesses started at a mere $540/ each- but are actually $2200/ each. They are nice chairs :)
The curved Madeline sofa- $3000. Melanie- you guessed that exactly right!

Art- $230 (just a reproduction on canvass)

Coffee table $1500

Fabric for drapes $250 (only $32/ yard) The area rug was by far the most over estimated item. The actual cost: $500. Jute is a great way to go on a small budget. It will never wear like wool- but a big bang for your buck!
Credenza $2600
Set of two botanicals $201
Mirror $897 (this is an impressive mirror!- the web doesn't do it justice)
Photo collage $294

Hey- thanks to all who participated! I had fun! I have never checked my blog so frequently :)

So- just how much does it cost? Prize post

Above is a picture of a job that I am working on. A new home purchase- a blank slate. Just what does it cost to decorate a room? I have a plan for the room below:

Everyone seems to be concerned about money. When I meet with clients most have no idea what their budget is a on a project. It is hard to know just what it costs to decorate a room or a home. I will tell you - What does it cost? $13,872.00. I want you to guess how that money is divided. :) In your comment- list these items- with what you think the costs are to come up with $13,872.00 Let's see who is the closest :)

Bainbridge chairs
Madeline sofa
art
coffee table
fabric for drapes
rug
credenza
set of two botanicals
mirror
photo collage

Set of two faux greens on the mantle (uttermost)

Art - for above Fireplace- by Minerva Tiechert- entitled Zion Ho I'd get a 32 x 36 on canvass. I might need to frame it when it comes in???? I like the casual wrapped canvass look- but I don't know how the edges look. Let's price it without the frame- I really like the idea of the more casual look.

Madeline Sofa By Nathan Anthony- Field fabric: Tegola Gold with pillows in Caney Creek Spring
Fabric for chairs Fabricutt # 3384902. (I don't know for sure about this fabric- I keep changing it---)

Havanawood Coffee Table from Palecek Duralee pattern #2361- made into drapes for her slider. I am pricing just the fabric- the client is a seamstress- like Tamlynn :)Classic Home Patterned Jute Area Rug -8 x 10.Credenza by Decorize - for a media cabinet- 80 inches wide (this is a large piece).

So- what costs what? I will let you know in a couple of days. I will give a prize to whomever is closest. Don't get TOO excited- not a huge prize- but I will give away a decorative picture frame to the winner. :) You can guess multiple times if you like.

Oh- and are you wondering about the walls... tune in on Wednesday. :)

Jackie's Rug

Dear Christine,

I have dark terracotta colored tile through my home, and I am looking for a rug for my entry. I have no furniture in my entry- but it is open to my living room. The living room has four cream colored chairs with accents in light blues and greens. I need help selecting an area rug- what do you suggest? I attached a couple that I am considering. (above)

Jackie

Dear Jackie,

No offense, but I don't like either one :) The top one is a little on the ugly side, and the shag one is a little on the boring side. I selected a few for you- lets get some feedback from the readers- any favorites?

1. The Audra Rug-

  1. The Dumain Rug

  2. The Stripes II Rug

  3. The Arcadian

5. The Amor Rug
